I can't help but notice something that seems to be almost an epidemic among quite a few people who claim to be Witches that I have met over the years. They have basic knowledge, tools and so forth, but when I ask them about things like what sorts of meditation and grounding techniques they prefer, or what sort of success rate they have with regards to their spell work (of course, never asking anything specific about their spells as that's a 'No No'), it's like they don't really do anything.
I always hear excuses as to why they don't meditate, celebrate Sabbats or do magick, pray, or anything however minor, that makes a Witch a Witch.
It's as though once they read a few books and got their tools, they all dabble for a while and stop, but still refer to themselves as Witches. It's only my opinion, but to me, a Witch that, for all intensive purposes no longer does anything related to Witchcraft, then you are either in a serious rut, depending on how long you've been stagnant, or shouldn't even call yourself a Witch. At best, a Witch that no longer does anything that Witches do is a 'non practicing Witch' or 'former Witch'.
I mean I met a woman who said she'd been Wiccan for 17 years and didn't know Halloween is called Samhain!
I pretended I was a beginner, which is a VERY good way to find out if someone's full of crap or not. This one couldn't even remember all the Sabbats! What self respecting Witch can't remember 8 holidays?
I know that their are a lot of eclectic Witches out there, like me, but even though I don't do a great deal of magick, I DO make a point of keeping my skills razor sharp, so when I do want to do magick, I'm not rusty or pulling out various volumes of my BOS's to remind myself how to do something. I just 'do it'.
What sort of skills or practices do you think are important to do to keep your skills (whatever they may be) sharp, and just general things that any Witch worth their weight in salt should be able to do at a moments notice? In YOUR opinion at what point do you think a Witch is no longer a Witch?
