I don't know Celeste, I think I may be more skeptical than you
. Allow me to demonstrate.
Remember though, it even says on your website that a good witch should question everything (EVEN the things an experienced practitioner, like yourself, says). So, when you say "all witches should celebrate Sabbats" I naturally answer "Why?"
"why would a witch celebrate Christmas?" Exactly my point! What I was trying to show was that it is silly for a witch, who is not inherently any religion, to HAVE to celebrate a religious holiday to be considered a witch.
It is true that the dates and traditions that the Sabbats are based on pre-date both Christianity and Wicca, but they were NOT historically called Sabbats. They are not even all from the same tradition! Greater sabbats are Celtic based, and the lesser are Germanic.
The dates themselves, and the traditions, are ancient. The Wheel of the Year as one whole concept (as we use it today) is not. It's a wiccan concept. Which I think is a wonderful system, but it doesn't apply to me.
So when you say "sabbats", I immedietly assume you mean "wiccan sabbats", and because a witch is not inherently a wiccan, I was confused. Thus the comparison with Christmas. See?
ALTHOUGH, because both the Sabbats and Christian holidays are based on older pagan holidays, wouldn't it make just as much sense for a witch to celebrate the Christian ones? (Granted for different reasons than the traditional Christian). Just saying.
I revere nature. I stay in tune with it, by immersing my self in it all year round. Does it really make me less of a witch if I don't call Halloween "Samhain"? I don't think it does.
Does it make me less of a witch if I don't recognize Lammas? I don't think it does. As long as I enjoy and revere all summer has to offer, why should ignoring a specific date invalidate me? It's a date from a tradition that I don't follow, after all.
Spirit Dancer-- You're right...we basically believe the same things, just show our belief in very different ways. The reason I'm being so adament about this though is because I don't want to be viewed as a poser or one of those 'trendy' practitioners (I like that word, btw) just because I'm in a minority.
Anyway, I hope that makes sense...it seems like I caused a lot of confusion. Sorry!
