Thank you Nox and Spirit dancer for sharing. That is actually quite helpful
.
beast11: Yes, supernatural TV is always great fun, isn't it? People are always bashing Buffy in the pagan community because it's inaccurate, but that doesn't stop it from being awesome storytelling and entertainment.
Nox: Ah yes, the big blue book. I haven't read it personally, but who doesn't know about it? Out of curiousity, does that mean that the version of Wicca you practise is Seax-Wicca? I know the Big Blue Book is just about witchcraft in general, but Bucky himself founded that particular religious branch of it.
I've always wanted to visit Salem. More for the people who live there now than for the history of the place, but still.
Spirit Dancer: Sounds like you've led a very interesting life! The group of people who you said were 'not serious' are exactly the type of people I'm writing about in my NaNoWriMo novel, save for a few. They tend to crop up among teenagers, I find. It's also interesting that you should mention vampirism and blood magic, as that also came up in my notes before I'd even posted here!
So since this is indeed the time be reflecting on one's past, I guess I should share too, eh?
My history isn't nearly so interesting as everybody else's.
I was lucky enough (in my view) to grow in a house where religion just wasn't brought up. Sure, my grandparents were heavily Christian, and I listened when they told me about God and Jesus, but it was always in a very positive atmosphere. Never "be good or you'll go to Hell," but always "He will always love and protect you." So I've never had any anomosity for their or any other monotheistic religion.
So when I was like, six, and started insisting that I wanted to be a witch when I grew up, they basically just went "Well alright honey, if that's what you want."
I guess they thought I'd grow out of it. I didn't; so one year for my birthday I was given a Wiccan Encyclopedia. I bet they thought I'd realize that real magic is nothing like on TV, but all it did was capture my interest even more. Two years after that, I got my first tarot deck (which I still have and use today). I started reading about the history of wicca, and was always saying that if I WAS a religious person, that would be my religion.
I had a brief falling out with all things magic when I was with my first boyfriend for a year. He was Mormon, and wanted me to be Mormon too. I refused, and eventually I realized that there was no way I could ever be happy with him and broke it off. Six months after that, I got together with my current partner, who is pagan.
Being with someone who shared my interests got me back into my studying full swing, but now I was studying with the intent of one day practising. I learned more about Wicca, and decided at last that it wasn't for me. I realized that I am always at my happiest and most fulfilled when I am in no specific group; I feel eclipsed by labels, and even more so by the rules and restrictions of religions. So I remain happily agnostic.
Then I found this site, decided to do the courses offered here during a 366 day-long training period, and the rest is history.
I keep one foot in the broom closet. I don't hide who I am, but I don't mention it either, except for to an exclusive few. I'm not terribly worried about it though; my dad once saw one of my spellbooks, commented "That stuff is evil, you know." and my mom added. "Well, everything is just what you make it." and he went "That's true. So I guess it's okay." Even my partner's mother, who STRONGLY feels that witchcraft is devil work, bought me some candles and an oil burner as a gift. I'm surrounded by very accepting people.
I don't know anyone magically inclined in real life, but I'm okay with that. I've always intended to be solitary, and I'll probably remain so.
One last thing; I don't consider myself a witch yet. Sometimes I call myself that, for lack of a better word, but I think I'm too young to give myself that role. Maybe when I'm older and more knowledgable, but for now I'm just a student.
So that's pretty much it. Told you it was boring
.
Have a great day everyone!
