To find out, I would do a simple black candle charged with hemlock oil, sending back the negative energy, you should be able to tell by how the candle burns whether someone is sending it or its something that's possessed him, by that, I mean that someone could have set him up to pick up a negative energy. Then you'll know what to do next.
I'm NOT a bible thump-er, but I will tell you I have used the book of Psalms with great success. I use Anna Riva's Powers of the Psalms to find the scriptures that I need, she has some great suggestions in there on how to use them. Some of them, not very many, will ask for certain oils, I prefer to make my own, but most are very simple solutions
If your open, here are two Psalms that will work.
First for clearing and trust me, I've cleared some extremely nasty demonic drug energy off of me, long story
Get in the tub with salt water, add rosemary and/or a few drops of frankincense (be careful, is irritating to skin)and dragons blood or whatever you have on hand to cleanse & clear with, say Psalms 118- 7 times without messing up,if you do, start from the begin until you can say the whole chapter without messing it up., do it 7 times.
Trust me, it sounds easy but if something is attacking you, its not that easy, make sure to let all the water out before getting out and rinse yourself off, place some crystals around your bed for protection until you can build your shield back up while you rest. If something was after ya'll, you'll know it by now.
2nd, for sending back a hex, light a black candle and say Psalms 56- 3 times, putting emphasis on verses 6-10.
Anyway, you said you were open to anything and I know these work, this way, you dont have to start a witch war, those are never any fun!
As a fellow reader, I do have to mention that when you read for a friend and as you know, that is counseling, always use more protection, its easier for us to pick up stuff from people we deeply care about
