Having attended many dog shows in the US and Canada over the years I would like to address the proper attire and behavior that is and should be required. These are some of the things that happened.....in Montreal a group of black leather german helmeted men with Neos sporting spiked collars arrived on the scene with the purpose of intimidation. When asked to leave they became beligerent and the police had to remove them. Should this reflect on their dogs? Probably not but the person trying to show their Jack Russell is going to be fearful. This scene has been repeated over and over in all parts of our country. In New Jersey a bunch of muscle shirted, tattoed, head shaved young men with pit bulls arrived on the show scene asking if anyone wanted to fight their dogs. Why?? Again the police had to remove them. The dogs are once again singled out because of the behavior of their owners. I do not fathom the need to bully others. What you do in the privacy of your own space is yours but it does not need to flow into the space of others.
I have also run into the same issues in dog parks where people have been run out because of the element of behavior and attire presented by some. So if you are of the order of those who present negative behavior do not pass this on to your dogs. There is no valid reason why anyone has to be publically subjected to your behavior or intimidated to the point where they have to fear you, not be able to use a facility because of your appearance and demeanor, these two go together and you are well aware of what you are doing. If you conduct yourself in a manner not offensive and do not use your dogs as a tool to enhance your political leanings then there would be no issue. We are all aware of the drug culture and their abusive use of certain breeds bringing down the BSL that threatens all of us.
If you attend any AKC show you will be properly attired or you will be asked to leave the show grounds. If any kind of negative behavior is present the rare breed circuit will do the same.
This same behavior should also be required any time you present yourself and your dog in public. Most stores have signs that say "shirts and shoes required". I find it peculiar that a store must tell its shoppers how to dress. What happened to self respect?
If you are fond of a certain culture structure and you function within that group that is your right but my rights also must be respected.
People usually choose a dog that suits their personality. Across the board this is pretty normal. If you are of a culture that is negative to our way of life do not impose that upon your dogs so that they become related to such. This is what causes BSL and other legislative issues. We cause our own problems. Profiling has become a necessary tool for our safety. Why our dogs have to be dragged into the mix is wrong. BSL and racism are human tools used to obtain power or so some think. I do not care much about your religious or political views and that is my right.
I personally have never liked dog parks because of the people who do not control their dogs, do not clean up after their dogs and have no idea of how to behave or treat others. I also have found that many public places are not properly controlled because they become a place for those who like to bully others. Perhaps a fee to use them might help pay for the maintenance and keep those who have other agendas at bay. It does seem that things that are free are often abused.
