Yes the Silkie do lay but eggs are small. I haven't been able to actually break one open yet but if I remember right - I think I heard they are either have a blue or green tint inside. They are about the size of maybe a golf ball? Or they could be smaller than that. I've also read Several places about how wonderful they are as Mothers! They LOVE to sit a nest and raise little ones. I think it would be absolutely Awsome if I got lucky enough to have gotten a rooster AND a hen!! But I won't know this till they're up around 6 months old.
(knowing my luck though I probably have 2 roo's here
)
Silkie's are in the Bantam family and also are heavy bodied, slow moving birds. So they don't do well outside as free range birds. They're to easy for the predators to get. This is why I'm keeping them up as pets only! Their temprements are Wonderful! They are very curious birds and will follow you around like a puppy
. And they always want to see what you're doing. I'm really looking forward to them getting a little size on them so I can start handling them.
I still haven't come up with names yet... I kinda like the star theme too - was looking today and thinking maybe Vega and Tauri?
I also had a suggestion from someone I work with - he thought they reminded him of "left-overs" from the 80's Hair Band Era.... If I go with this thought - I could have one named Motley and the other Crue!!
But it's still undecided as yet... do you like the possibilities I've come up with?
