If I do end up with 2 roo's - its OK... Silkies are known for their calm, friendly temperament. They are among the most docile and gentle of all the poultry breeds. Another thing I think is so neat about them - They (Silkies) are one of the oldest breeds of chicken. Their first written account comes from Marco Polo, who mentioned chickens with fur-like plumage in his Asian travelogues in the 13th century.
What I think is so sad here, traditional Chinese medicine has held that chicken soup made with Silkie meat is a curative food. So with that said - yes, they are also raised for meat.
On another note here - you mentioned breeding... there is another breed of chicken called a Turken - it looks like a chicken but it has no feathers on its neck... its also called a "Naked Neck" - and if you cross this with a Silkie - you get a "Showgirl"...
Here is a Turken -
and then - a Silkie -
and you get a Showgirl!!!
Hows that for what cross breeding can do?????
