Scorpions and other such "dangerous" creatures are nothing to be overly concerned with. Scorpions are very reclusive and hide most of the time. They come out at night to hunt and hide during the day. A curious dog is a likely candidate for a sting but most scorpions are no more dangerous than a wasp or bee. The stings are painful but if there is no allergic reaction then there is no danger in most cases. There are a couple species that have stronger venom and can cause a problem even thou most times still not life threatening.
Learning there habits and learning to live with them is much easier and safer for you and them than killing them or putting chemicals around your yard and house. They are a part of the ecosystem and play there part in being a skilled predator. Play your part by learning about them and not just killing them for no good reason at all.
Norman, you are in a part of the world that has several small dangerous animals. Were you live, is there habitat and land. They deserve to be there just as much as you. Snakes, scorpions and spiders come with the territory. Learn about them and you will both be happier and safer.
Just so it is clear. There is no safe effective deterrent for scorpions. Like a few have said do your best to not provide hiding places if you don't want them around as they spend most of there time hiding and will not feel comfortable if they can not find readily available hiding spaces. Hiding spaces: under rocks, wood, in cracks & crevices, under sheds or any type of structures. If there is a dark place they can hide in, they may hide there. If you leave your shoes on the ground, shake them out before you put them on. don't stick your finger in a crack or under a rock without looking first. Basically, learn about your surroundings and just use common sense.
