I feel for her and the dog. One of my guys has a very similar fear of anything that makes any noise at all. I can drop something as small as a tuna can/ my cell phone/ anything... he immediately leaves the vicinity!! If the noise is loud - thunder/ drop a cooking pot... etc.... He will hide in his crate for some time and under no circumstances can be coaxed out.
Depending on the noise level will dictate how long he hides.
I too would love some ideas here too as I have tried de-sensitizing, practice 'set-ups', treats, plus more and never yet found an answer or solution. And like the 3 yr old, there is no rhyme or reason for this. There has never been a trauma of anykind. I've had him checked all over including his ears... just no "logical" reason that I can see. He just doesn't like it!!!!
For storms that get loud - I use Valerian Root to help calm him. Seems to help some, but still doesn't stop the problem.
