I have a super sensitive smoke alarm that goes off whenever I cook, especially if I use the oven. I try to rmember to turn on the ceiling fans when I use the oven, but sometimes I forget. Bodhi immediately goes to the door to be let out when I turn the oven on, because it is a hideous noise. My ceilings are vaulted pretty high and if it does go off, I have to get my hair dryer, plug it in out in the living room, and aim it up at the smoke alarm to get it to stop.
Maybe if they use a small plastic bag, put it on the floor with it opened wide, and put treats inside. Gradually make it more difficult to access the treats so the dog has to make noise with the bag getting the treats. It might take weeks, but it might work.
The plastic bottle thing that Norman does might work. Bodhi loves those things -- just be sure to remove the cap.
Maybe bubble wrap -- the kind with the big bubbles.
