After dealing with the Ethics (lack of) of many Breeders and Trainers of dogs... Learning many lessons over many years that there are multiple "tricks" Breeders use and/or abuse I would try to be a little more aware.
I went tonight to pick up 3 -2 wk old Silkie babies. The price was reasonable - this is a known breeder that also shows her birds. All is wonderful.
I have many email conversations, no flags... I arrive to pick the birds up, all looks good. I have babies in hand and cash has traded hands, I'm ready to leave - and in course of conversation it comes out at the last minute that the babies I'm getting are in fact - not from her stock (beautiful birds penned next to brooder) but are bought as eggs and hatched from unkown breeders and there is no guarantee of quality or parentage.
I was told up front that these babies were most likely pet quality, yet prior to sale in hand I was understanding that these babies were to light for her breeding program, they were not being kept and sold as pets. It was not till I had birds in hand walking out the door and money had changed hands that the "rest of the story" came out.
I was so mad at myself for not thinking to be more specific and I took this entire scene for face value prior to arrival - not knowing till after sealed that I was not buying what I thought I was.
I guess my moral here -
regardless of species be aware when money is involved - things may not always be what they seem. If you have specific goals and you are buying to improve... don't take it for granted.
Now - I will have to wait many months for these babies to grow up to find out if they are in fact going to be what I was hoping for as adults. If the parentage had been known up front that there were questions as to breed standard compatablity, and there is in fact nothing known about them - I probably would not have gotten these babies but waited for others that I could be certain would work for my goals.
When dealing with specific goals, learn the right questions to meet your needs. Don't ever assume people will be up front. Her goal was to sell a bird - she accomplished this. Not sure my goal was met - but at this point in time - I can still hope.
