I imagine with birds as well as any other purchase one has to investigate carefully their source. The old "adage" you get what you pay for seems to come into play. Reputation is important. The fact that I tell you something does not make it so. However if you purchased these birds to use as brooders does it make a difference?
Again the word "show" is not something you should take too seriously be it chickens or dogs. Showing is not the be all end all and does not mean quality. Why would one put stock in a system that is corrupt?? Judges are bribed or incompetent. While I am familiar with only the dog show ring one only has to go to a show to see the lack of quality in the breeds being presented. Why would chickens be any different? Race horses are filled with drugs and are dying all over the place. With dogs paperwork is forged way too much of the time. I have been in the dog area for over 20 years now with this one breed. I have kept my lines clean and registered. I have never introduced any outside line that was not researched carefully and I have paid lots of money for the bloodlines. I know them inside out. Buyers come here to get their pups and see and meet the sire and dam and the conditions under which they live and are raised. There are no secrets here. I do not advertise my litters anywhere other than word of mouth. This has taken years of being reliable and honest. This is not about money or fleecing the public. It is about the breed only.
I myself, have a small flock of Delawares and Hampshires that I use for personal egg production only. These are strong healthy chickens and when they are gone I will most likely purchase another small group from a very reputable farmer I know for again only eggs. I have no desire to raise birds but I do like to hear them sing and chickens do sing.
There are no bargains in life and it seems very little truth these days. There is also no recourse when one gets screwed. Mis-representation is thievery and there is no honor among thieves.
Perhaps those who practice deceit might want to pull up the internet dictionary and look up truth, honesty and honor.
