Good question. While I like to think it is being done out of respect to namesake a fine dog I am being niave in thinking this. It is usually trading on the name of a famous dog for benefit to self. You will find dogs with a single name but no kennel in the name which now leaves you with not knowing who the dog is or where it came from.
Lineage is important in purchasing a dog and future of the line and breed. If you are buying a specific breed you want the entire history of this dog. This is why some of us (very few) are now using DNA and the added expense of doing so to secure our lines and breedings. Sire and dam are DNA'd so you can do so with your pup and know that you indeed got the dog you expected. A pedigree states the lineage of a given dog but the DNA proves that the dog came from that sire and dam. Hopefully more will do this keeping the dogs pure and breeders honest.
As you are aware?? many people lift pictures off sites and claim them as their dogs. This has happened to me more than once. Listing dogs that are famous in the past hoping to lead prospective buyers into a false idea that you are in some way connected or have such dogs is wrong and deceitful yet is done all the time. Dogs that are 20 years old or dead are not reproducing.

Whatever happened to the honest person??? Why is it more interesting to cheat people rather than do the right thing?
In dog breeding one can alter a line and correct a flaw in a couple of generations with careful selected breeding access to the right dogs and a bit of luck. With this in mind why then cheat and lie when you can do the right thing just as easily. It baffles me but then I do not depend upon dogs for a living. If any breeder of worth added up the cost they will quickly find profit is not in the game. My pay rate over the years is about a penny a day or less however the love of dogs more than compensates for the hours and tears spent. Keeping this thought in mind when you purchase a puppy and you spend a decent amount for a clean line and healthy dog care for it well as much has been put into making you happy.
