Last Night at Sidewalk Posted by Lach on 9/16/2007, 8:37 am Great stuff last night. I didn't really get to settle into the backroom until Bryan's set. Along with his drummer Penny they've got that guitar/drums thing down. Kelsey Bennett was next and her approach and phrasing is entrancing. It's weird like you think it's totally off and then you realize it's gotten under your skin and led your mind to new terrain. If these two acts are the start of a Boston Antifolk scene then I can't wait to see where it leads. It was all brought back home by Eric Wolfson and The War Cabinet who rocked the roof off and had 'em literally dancing in the aisles. Thanks for a great time y'all.  Post a Response

Re: Last Night at Sidewalk Posted by mike baglivi (mikebaglivi) on 9/19/2007, 1:01 am, in reply to "Last Night at Sidewalk" YEah - i walked in on Jersey time as usual, which was about 10 minutes left in Wolfson's set, and the room was absolutely boiling over: Drunk girls and guys dancing on the side, Debe Dalton and company getting hammered in the corner - and loving it, Lach rocking the soundboard in "primetime" hours - and Wolfson and the war cabinet tearing it up like a country-tough bar band(that's a good thing, in case anybody needs the reference clarified: i guess its my way of saying that everybody was having a good time, and the room and band were one - where you can't tell where the music ends and the conversations are beginning: its all one big LIVING noise!!!) I only needed to walk into the room to know what had been happening all night: the energy was obvious immediately - like a bad smell.....or in this case, a real good one("Heeeeeeyyyyy: WHO PLANTED ROSES??!!!) I hope every night from now on is like this, and i hope im there dancing. Cheers, Kudos, Props, and Praise to Wolfson for having the spirit to pull it off - it was one of the best nights ive had anywhere in a long time, and it lit a fresh spark in the Sidewalk room that's only gonna lead to more good things. Personally, i think i hit a peak that night(probably during one of my better dance moves for the video shoot - i'm sure it'll be on the footage, and then you can see what i mean: i was just like John Travolta at his junior high prom - so still pretty good) love you all, mike P.S. if any of you head my new song "Frank Sinatra and Nuclear War", and liked it - or better yet - DIDN'T, then come this Saturday at 10 to hear it again: its gonna get better each time i play it, and im looking forward to singing it without a sore throat. but no matter how many notes are missed: none or 100, ive learned that the show is about the stuff in-between - or maybe even overhead: the energy, the air, the look on all our faces -and whether or not the guy singing is actually ENJOYING the music himself. sometimes i forget about that part, and start counting the most insignificant mistakes( aren't they all insignificant?), and worry how they will effect another night that hasn't even happened yet - instead of using them to charge the one we're so lucky to have. So if im ever a drag, then i apologize, and promise that for each time i lose my birthday party spirit, that will be one time in the future it will be guaranteed not to happen - until i finally just stay in the moment for good and it never happens again. Or maybe ill just go see Eric Wolfson again for a kick in the ass. come at 8 to start with Dan Fishback(what better way to start a party?) and stay through David LK Murphy to the end. sorry, this REALLY wasn't going to be a show promotion post - i actually just came here to check the calendar - but you know how everything happens....one thing leads to another: the big rock bangs into the bigger rock, the amoeba get ambitious, a caveman gets horny, and "wha-la": THE BEATLES!!!  Post a Response

(and you got to love those second verse drum solos). i felt a little betrayed that they decided to say "NO" to playing Dont Terrorize Me, especially after me listening to it on the front page radio so much...  Post a Response
