I have been searching for information on my grand father who was African American. He supposedly came out of Appomattox, VA. His father was John Lewis Williams (b: 1840-50ties)and his mother was Sallie Steward Williams (b: about 1828). My mother (Sarah Williams b: 1909-1999) said she, Sallie had been a slave. I am interested in finding information on where they all came from. Who owned them? They would have been farmers perhaps and housekeeper.
I found a Thomas Williams b: 1840; Born: Virginia; Age at census: 40; Occupation: Farmer; Married; Race: Black; Census Place: Mecklenburg, VA; Hist. Lib. Film: 1255377; Film #: T9-1377; Page: 14C. I am not sure if this is my relative root or not. This would have perhaps been my grand father's, father.
My grand father died in 1964. He was born around 1890-98 time frame. He was about 77 or 75 years old at death. He died in Lynchburg, VA.
I'd appreciate information of any kind about them.
