that they have proven to work? Below is an old hot spot remedy that I got from my Uncle Bruce about 45 years ago. Some may know of him as co-owner of Adams & Crutchfield's GRCH Art.
1/2 cup - Pine Tar
1 cup - Raw Linseed Oil
1/4 cup Venice Turpentine
(all ingredients are available at Tack Stores, Feed Mills or Co-ops.)
Mix all ingredients together and apply to hot spot.
