Posted by Gerald Smith Many people get caught up in the excitement and yes, a dog show is exciting. After 30 years I still find them exciting. The first necessary thing you need to win at a show is a dog that conforms to the standard. If you do not have a dog that conforms to the standard, why are you going to a dog show? Dog shows are not about winning and loosing. Dog Shows are about having a non-biased opinion in the selection of FUTURE BREEDING STOCK. By the judge selecting those dogs that do what? CONFORM TO THE BREED STANDARD. If you make excuses for your dog, you will fail in this endevor. If you fail to train, condiditon and groom your dog to fit the standard, you will fail. A renouned judge once stated that 80% of all the dogs at any show were not show dogs. Which catagory does your dog fall in? What have you done to insure that the dog you are showing fits the standard? Ever notice how many people stand around at a dog show and complain about not winning? Why don't they take the time to learn why they did not win? If they did they may have to face the fact that the dog they are showing does not really fit the breed standard. Odd, we all want the best. Yet, when it comes to dogs why don't we all take the time to learn. Learning is cheap. I recently had a conversation with a novice APBT exhibitor who has easily spent $10,000.00 buying substandard dogs. Why? They did not know any better. They went to one dog show, realized they were on the wrong track and took the time to learn and now they have some promising pups that will make a name for themselves in the future. The trick is they took the time to learn. That is a challenge to everyone, learn. After 30 odd years I still consider myself a student of dogs. Where do you consider you level of knowledge?

If you take your dog to any conformation event and you have not trained your dog to win, conditioned your dog to win and groomed your dog to win, how can you expect to win?
