A judge ruled yesterday that Michael Vick cannot plead guilty to state
dogfighting charges in Virginia by videoconference.
Surry County Circuit Judge Samuel Campbell ruled that Vick would have to
appear in court in person, the Associated Press reported.
Vick's attorneys had made the request. Prosecutor Gerald Poindexter opposed
it, the AP reported, preferring that Vick's plea wait until after his
release from federal prison.
The Atlanta Falcons quarterback is serving a 23-month federal prison
sentence in Leavenworth, Kan., for his role in a dogfighting operation based
at a home that Vick owned in Virginia. He is on indefinite suspension by the
NFL.
Vick's guilty plea to the state charges reportedly will result in a
suspended jail sentence and additional year of probation after his release
from federal prison, under the terms of a plea deal. He is to enter his plea
Nov. 25, the AP reported. Resolving the state charges against him reportedly
would enable Vick to be eligible to enter a halfway house for the final six
months of his federal prison sentence.
