I have fished the James for many years have heard both ways that the blue barrel is and is not legally blocked. I do know of several people receiving tickets and being convicted of trespassing in the blue barrel pit. Those who enter the blue barrel pit are relying on the Army Corp of Engineers, the Va. Dept. of Game and the local court of law having the same interpretation of whether the pit is legally blocked. I personally have not or will not enter the pit until the pit is not blocked. A reasonable person could pull up to the entrance, see the pit is blocked and assume it is done so legally. Since not all contestants have internet access and read this message board, there will be some in the tournament who believe the pit is off limits. No one expects Castaway to determine which pits are legally blocked. The contestants do expect Castaway to establish rules and off-limits to provide a fair and level playing field for all.
: Kim, do they know that the Blue Barrel Pit is
: blocked? If they do, then they need to
: unblock it. I will try to call them also and
: see about removing the blockade.

: John the game department is not who you need
: to talk to its the Corp of Engineers. They
: are somewhere around Norfolk area. I'll get
: their number again. The last time i had
: conversation with them i was told the only
: pit that should be blocked is Hatcher's
: Island and that is anywhere on the James
: River.

: To answer your question. Hatcher's Island is
: off limits, but the blue barrel pit is not.
: The pits have been a major concern for the
: last few years with our tournament trail and
: im not sure why. Some of you have fished
: Pro-am teams and other tournaments for many
: years and they had no off limits. You must
: understand that Hatcher's island has a
: permit to be blocked off. If you go in there
: you will get a ticket for trespasing. That
: is why we chose to make it off limits. The
: blue barrel pit is a whole different issue.
: Im not a fisherman so im not sure why
: everyone is making a major issue over
: whether its fished in or not. If you want it
: open to everyone take a picture of it
: blocked, send it to the corp of engineers
: and they will have it removed. But some of
: you are making it a Castaway Tournament
: Trail issue and i think that is crazy
: especially if you have fished Pro-am or any
: other tournament held on the river in the
: past. You guys can either stand around and
: watch every pit on that river be blocked off
: or do something about it. Unless in the
: future you would rather only have the option
: of fishing the main river. Maybe im wrong
: but i dont see how the blue barrel pit is
: going to save the fish population. Im not
: saying whether it is right or wrong to go in
: and fish. Bottom line, its a matter of law
: and that pit should be open!!!!! If those
: land owners want to call it their land then
: build a wall to where it doesn't flow with
: the tide and its theirs. If i offended
: anyone let me say now im sorry. Hope you
: guys enjoy Sat. The weather will be great.
: See you then.
:
: Another set of pits that are blocked off are
: the ones in the back of chippokes. Are these
: pits suppose to be blocked? Thats a question
: I couldn't even get the game comission to
: answer for me.
