Fishing Chautauqua Lake this coming weekend with my two daughters…7 and 9. A friend is going to bring a boat, but will also be fishing from our kayaks. We are staying at WeWanChu cottage on the lake. We cannot get out all day this year due to wife's illness…we need to check on her frequently and she misses us back at the cottage. Limited to 3 hours at a time once or maybe twice a day.
I would love to hear any suggestions regarding techniques for fishing for bass…small and large. We came the same weekend last year and only found one decent smallmouth in 3 days of fishing. Caught it on a weedline on a 1/8 oz jig with grub. I do not have experience fishing for bass on this type of water. I went out and purchased some 3" and 4" senkos as well as some 5" Gulp worms to try wacky rigging as I have never tried that. Also picked up some Strike King bitsy jigs [ I think that was their name] and a couple of shaky style jigs after reading a few articles on newer bass techniques. I grew up fishing in the south in shallow water with live minnows for bass and catfish and fishing deeper water with lures is still a bit of a mystery to me. I would love to get my daughters on a few fish and I realize that might be a tall order. Should I just concentrate on the panfish for them or is it worth a try for bass?
Any advice on bass would be appreciated. Note we are strictly catch and release on bass and walleye. We MIGHT keep a few panfish if we caught some nicer ones.
Note I used to fish the walleyes along the weedlines with leeches on the lake 10 years ago, but my last few yearly trips it seems almost a waste of time in comparison.
I will have two fly rods and two spinning rods with me. Spinning reels spooled with 8 and 10 pound Trilene XL. Have both a 6 and 8 weight fly rod with floating lines. I am guessing the smallies might be too deep for flyfishing usually so I may not fish those much other than playing with panfish.
I would be glad to cover expenses if someone wanted to give me a small tutorial on the lake that might help my daughters catch a fish while Dad took pictures!
Thanks.
Barry
