Posted by Jan on October 5, 2006, 2:31 am, in reply to "Re: Agave gracilipes" here's what Gentry (Agaves of Continental North America, 1982) says: "On second thought, however, A. gracilipes may be a specific product of geologically past introgression between A. neomexicana and A. lechuguilla, the habitats of which now are generally separated by about 2,000 feet (610 m) elevation. Perhaps we should regard A. gracilipes as a product of the combined genes of A. neomexicana x lechuguilla, but which has not yet achieved genetic isolation from A. lechuguilla. Cytological investigation might throw considerable light on the relationships of these nominal populations and their natural evolution.
