Jan, My theory was that if I could get one through at that size that it would be a hardier type (and in the process the less hardy ones would be weeded out). Tim from Mass. gave me the idea, and I like to think it is the best way to get a truly hardy Agave (also it's much cheaper to buy seeds and grow them to a small size then to buy a few bigger Agaves, especially when you expect to lose many!!!)
