Have you considered trying A. utahensis (pick any subspecies) again with overhead protection in winter time in order to keep it dry? I believe you had it planted in nearly pure inorganic media so that ground moisture was not a problem, right? The info you posted regarding mckelveyana and lophantha sounds quite promising. It's always worth of trying (and trying again and again) species with different provenance. My A. lophantha seedlings are from a plant which grew and set seed in N. Carolina and I have no idea where the mother plant originated from. How did A. toumeyana v bella and A. parviflora do before they died? Paul_S wrote his 3(4?) parvifloras do fine in his mild UK winters. BTW, thanks for converting the values to Celsius and metric ;-) I don't see that much on US fora.
