Posted by Tim MA z6 on October 23, 2006, 6:11 am, in reply to "utahensis and others" Most of the utahensis agaves were protected with a poly sheet 'roof' to keep off cold rain. Snow generally did cover the plants since it blows into the protection area. I've had no success even with larger specimens. They rot out too easy in our area. We get about 4" (10cm) of precipitation every month of the year.....they just can't tolerate this I guess. From what I've experienced with Mckelveyana and lophantha, I'd say Mckelveyana is more hardy. I've seen lots of variation in color, spination with lophantha so some forms may be more hardy than others. I only tried one agave each of toumeyana v bella and parviflora. Both died. I had 'high' hopes for both but didn't see anything special with them. I'd like to try more of each. Perhaps I didn't get the 'real' thing.
