Posted by Paul S again on October 24, 2006, 11:46 am, in reply to "Re: Agave montana vs. A. gentryi" Ian, had a look on my map - Concepcion del Oro is about 150km in the worng direction for this trip, alas, though an easy tag on for a later one. I could see it would be easy to make our way up to Real de Catorce, then head west to Concepcion del Oro, then east to Galeana where there are things like Agave bracteosa, Yucca linearifolia... then back down to La Pena for the Agave montana/Nolina 'La Siberica' extravaganza... you could lose a week or two investigating all that lot and still only see a fraction of what is there. I would lay money on gentryi/montana being in Galeana, actually - I definitely think it worth spending some time up there. But not this time. Unfortunately, or rather fortunately, we are doing a kind of '3 centre' trip. Tamaulipas/Nuevo Leon borders west of Cd Victoria, Queretaro/Guanajuato borders sort of south of San Miguel de Allende (great town), then a long haul down to Oaxaca to spend a few days mooching around the mountains there. Unless we get seriously distracted. I am getting so excited!
Jan - as it happens, we ARE going to call into Real de Catorce again. It is JUST such a nice town, well worth visiting for it's own sake, plants notwithstanding. Last time we didn't see seed, though there was a plant coming into flower. Fingers crossed. As you can see in the pic, the terrain is very arid - not much else up there!
