I agree with Paul's comment, but I think we can make a list of those plants:
Washingtonia robusta
Phoenix canariensis
Agave americana unless you're in a really sheltered spot
etc
But if some really rare, untried thing comes from a colder climate than do the plants on that list.... then I have to try it!

And I note that RPS has some good new Agaves in - surprisingly, with better prices than MG in a few places. Agave asperrima ssp. maderensis looks like a must try.
