Hello David,
I agree with you that D. leiophyllum normaly does not need a protection
but it gives not experiences with this plant here in Germany.
So I try it as first with protection and this year I will wait till -17°C befor I protect the Dasy
The temps can be fallen here till -25°C if we become a winter since 2004-2005 than I have a lot of work ;O)
A lot of plants needs than a heating cable.
It is more sport than hobby
Here are two of my Dasylirions, which are planted out in spring 2007.
