I'm not educated in horticulture or garden design, so I'm probably using the wrong terms, but what are your favorite background or structure plants for xeriscaping? By "background" and "structure" I mean everything but the bling. I'm thinking about Mexican evergreen oaks or mid-sized shrubs and grasses that can give the beds some quick height, rain protection (important in the PNW) and a softer edge. I've got Lewisia in my dry bed and wouldn't mind adding an 8-10 foot, open, broadleafed evergreen, a shruby thing - and a few little bright flowering numbers for seasonal appeal. What are your favorites?
