Gods are figures of extreme worship.
There is a definite tendency for people to believe in things that they believe have greater powers than themselves.
Would people pray to Dick Cheney? No, because he is inevitably human, and an ill one at that. However, if the vice president could perform impossible miracles, many will see him as a god.
