My take on despair is that despair stems from the radical uncertainty proposed by existentialism. For instance, since everything is a possible outcome for any given situation, the lack of assuredness and uncertainty leads to a sense of lost hope, or despair, in any action taken. However, that is not to say that our will has no effect on the outcome, but that the outcome is determined by both our will and chance, and since chance is in the equation then nothing is ever guaranteed. Since nothing is guaranteed, why even bother? OH THE DESPAIR!
