I thought that Ladd was taking the side of profit. He compares the rules of business to a game of chess. The point of chess is to checkmate, the point of a business is to make profit. I feel that he does not exactly accept moral standards, rather he accepts rational standards. If following, or not following moral standards is rationally best in order to reach the end result of profit then that is what must be done.
