Remember last March my neighbor moved out leaving behind two dogs and a cat? Well, he came back in June and we turned his dogs back over to him. Told him to feed them separate because the female was bossy and took the food from the male. He said, yes-yes-thank you. Ian said BTW there are a lot of mice on your property; we keep finding them drowned in the dogs' water bucket. Mr A-hole said a couple cats would take care of that.
Then he moved back in (while working 3 jobs or so he said). He had a neighbor up the road move in with her kids. He had a neighbor across the road move into his shed. With the 3 jobs and all he wasn't around much but the lady started letting the dogs run loose again so we had a few words over that.
A month or so later the male dog was so thin that we debated calling in an animal abuse investigation group. Ian, said he'd try talking to the guy first so I said if the dog didn't put on any weight in the next week I was making that phone call.
They guy said, yes the boy dog was thin. He'd try to get the ex to take the bossy girl dog. Then one day, both dogs were gone. (and Ian's heart broke because he liked those dogs, especially the male who was just a great boy.)
Then the neighbor said he threw out the guy in the shed for being a jerk. (Duh, what kind of person is going to live on the top floor of a tool shed/garage?) Mr. I'm an idiot said his home was a wreck and too small and he could sell it for $180,000 ...like that makes any sense. Then the lady and her kids went away. Even though he wasn't there much, he got another dog. The dog cried a lot. It was tied up most of the time and was not old enough to be comfortable with being neglected. Then a month ago two black kittens were hopping around his place. (Now I was very sad because we didn't know what the jerk had done to his two dogs but he was getting more animals and it was clear he was not taking proper care of them.)
Then people started packing. The dog went away. Twelve days ago (as of Tuesday), the place went dark. In the 6 of of 12 days we have been home we have seen NOBODY by the property.
Yesterday, I finally saw what I was afraid of finding. The two kittens were still there. The frickin A-hole had left them! I brought over food and water with the thought of feeding them until next weekend on the off chance the a-hole hadn't really bugged out. The kittens had other ideas though and would not stay in the relative safety behind the fence. So now they will stay in our travel trailer for a week. (It's a good time of year for that -- not too cold and not too hot.)
Saturday they have to go to a shelter and we will do the best we can to get them into a good one. I think idiot left them some food as the kittens are in decent shape but I've never seen little guys show such enthusiasm for mere kibble. The water they did not care about so they must have had enough of that.
If that jerk comes back before the weekend ...I guess the coyotes got his kittens. (They are only between 3 and 4 months old, for crying out loud. They are longer haired and one is already matted around its neck and both have seed pods in their coats. He can't possibly expect to find them at home if he comes back at this point.)
Oh and if that is not enough. Since April we have been feeding a feral dog. She's got a rope around her neck ...like a cheapo animal control lead. It's probably embedded now. She's extremely skittish. Ian can get within about 18 inches of her now, but she's still at 4 feet or so for me. ...and she's pregnant now. We called animal control when she went into heat but they never showed. (Probably would have to be darted.)
Pups are due the first or second week of November and she lives under a juniper tree/bush on a neighbor's property. Ian say's he'll talk to the neighbor about letting us set a proper house up for her there. Don't know what else to do but we have these two large doghouses that came with the property so that's probably the best we can do. (There is a feral dog living a couple miles away. Certain people feed her. Must of had her spayed as they have some older dogs that look like her x an old feral male that has since passed on.) I was thinking that if we can't do better then at least maybe we could work out that sort of arrangement for her.
...there was another feral dog this spring but she 'moved on'. There was another neighbor who abandoned two dogs and a cat. We took the female dog to the shelter. I don't know what happened to the cat and the male dog. It's just been a bad year. Even at the vet on Monday... one couple had 3 bottle-raised abandoned puppies and a lady with a bird said her friend had found 5 dumped puppies.
Say a prayer for the kittens and our poor feral mom-to-be. Maybe add in a few 'special requests' that certain human pieces of you know what get what's coming to them.
