Just my .02, but I agree with Bekah in that each case is different. Our last cat lived to be 17 years old We got him as a kitten. During the last 3 years of his life, he wouldn't seek out our company. He'd find a place and stay there until it was time to eat, or potty time. He developed a really bad habit of urinating in places other than the litter box; although he sometimes would use the box. His fur was dull and lifeless and it was obvious he was no longer happy. Scott and I struggled for about a year as to when the right time would be to help him to the bridge. We probably should have done it sooner than we did, but every time we thought we were ready, we just couldn't do it. He eventually developed some type on tumor in his stomach. I don't know what it was because he would totally freak out and literally hyperventilate in a vehicle so we didn't take him to the vet. Do I still second guess my decision to send him to the bridge when I did? Sometimes, yes. But most times, even though he still was eating and didn't seem to be in pain, I believe I did the right thing for him. You know your animals best, but even then it's always a hard decision. I'm sorry you're facing this. I wish none of us ever had to.
