This was not a group media interview with other press people. No CNN or FOX or CBS. It was to be a one-on-one interview, just me and the jolly guy. Without hesitation, I accepted the invitation.
On the appointed day, two of Santa’s helpers showed up at my door. They were both short fellows dressed in black suits and wearing dark glasses, and each of them had a flesh-colored ear bud in their right ear. I wondered if I was seeing Santa or the President? Although I was expecting a sleigh with reindeer, they didn’t have a vehicle of any kind. I asked how we were getting to the interview location (which was, of course, a secret).
They told me to stand really still as they flanked me, and gently took my hands. They said to close my eyes and not open them until they said to do so. I complied.
Almost immediately, I felt air whooshing around me and could hear sounds like the roar of the ocean. I don’t know how long this lasted, but soon one of them said, “You can open your eyes now.”
When I did, I found myself on a beautiful beach, and who was standing in front of me but Santa Claus!
It is rare for me to get nervous during interviews, but I must say I felt nervous and a little tongue-tied. Santa waved me to a chair as he sat down in another across from me. He had the most generous smile and all I could feel from him was love. Then he said, “Mia, I asked you here for this interview because I know you will share what I have to say with thousands of people. The world is hurting right now and I want to help however I can.”
Mia: Santa, that is a perfect lead-in to something I would like to ask. With so many people losing hope and feeling lost, what can you say to them?
Santa: I’ve been around many centuries and I have seen times like this before. I want people to know they are loved and cared for in ways they can’t begin to imagine. Yes, times are difficult for some right now. But this will change. Things will get better. Worrying won’t help anything.
There have been some selfish people who are at the root of these problems and they will eventually reap their own returns. That is guaranteed. In the meantime, however, others have to focus on the positive, on what they can do instead of what they feel is being done to them.
Life is not always easy for me and my helpers. We have our challenges. Yet people expect me to be jolly and happy with a deep belly laugh whenever they see me. Could I disappoint them by frowning and crying? Never.
Mia: How do you stay so happy all the time? Is this something we can learn to do?
Santa: Absolutely. It is all a state of mind. I don’t let myself think about my troubles. Why, just the other day a few of my reindeer weren’t feeling very well. I can’t deliver gifts around the world without a fit and happy team of reindeer. I didn’t panic. I just called in my veterinarian, had her take a look, and found out one of my freshman elves had given some of the reindeer peppermint candy. Who gives candy to reindeer? The vet gave them a healing tonic and now they are fine.
I could have let this send me into a tizzy but I didn’t. All of you can do the same thing. When you have troubles, if there is something you can do about them, do it and move on. Don’t focus so much on your troubles and they will get smaller. Focus on solutions and they will get bigger.
Mia: Santa, I have always wondered how you manage to give presents to children all over the world in such a short time. And how do you account for the different time zones so you don’t end up in someone’s chimney in the middle of the day?
Santa: Ah, yes, that pesky issue of time. Here’s my secret. I ignore it. Yes, you heard me right. I ignore time. People think time is real but it isn’t. It doesn’t even exist. When you ignore it and just do what you love, time melts away. Suddenly, you find that everything you wanted to do is done. I don’t own a watch or a clock. I don’t even own a calendar or a smartphone.
I live in infinite space and time. That means neither exists for me. This is how I do so much in what you think is a small amount of time.
Mia: When I told some of my friends on Facebook that you and I would be visiting, I asked them if they had questions for you. A woman named SARK, who I suspect you know well, wanted to know, “How do you keep the magic even when there are so many disbelievers out there?”
Santa: Well, SARK, I don’t let what other people think bother me. I know what’s true. There are a lot of people who don’t think I am real. They see all those Santas at the department stores and figure I’m as fake as they are. What they don’t realize is these are some of my helpers. They have to have a special license from me in order to represent me the way they do. I approve of this since it allows more children of all ages to feel my mystery.
If others try to steal my magic, I blast them with feelings of joy. If they are open, they will feel this, get happy and realize it doesn’t matter whether or not I am real. What’s important is their own ability to feel joy within.
Mia: Another Facebook friend, Ruthie Stender, wanted to ask, “Do you have any advice for those who’ve lost their sense of joy, mystery and enthusiasm, that child-like wonder during the holiday season? What one or two things could a person do to rekindle these energies?”
Santa: Ruthie, I tell these people not to take themselves so seriously. This is why children feel the wonder, why they see my elves and the fairies, why they experience the magic in their hearts. They don’t take themselves seriously. They know life is a game and is meant to be played, not endured. Grown-ups forget this and believe they have to work hard to be happy.
Spend some time every day letting yourself feel magical. Close your eyes and remember what it was like before you stopped believing in me. Remember how excited you got thinking of the gifts you would receive? Remember what it felt like to wonder if you would catch a glimpse of me if you snuck into the living room at night?
Remember what that felt like and carry this in your heart. The magic will return because it never left, it just got small due to lack of nourishment.
Now, Mia, our visit is over. Thank you for coming here and for giving me the chance to share some of my thoughts with your readers.
Mia: The gratitude goes to you, Santa. Thank you for inviting me and for sharing these great thoughts with our readers. Can I have a hug?
Santa smiled, stood up, walked over to me, and gave me the most loving, warm hug I have ever had. I closed my eyes and allowed myself to soak up the Santa energy. Never in my wildest dreams had I ever thought I would hug Santa! As we stood there, I felt time and space evaporate and experienced myself as an infinite joyful being without a care in the world.
When I opened my eyes, I was standing in front of my office again and came inside as fast as I could to write all of this down so I could share it with you.
Santa’s message to all of us is this: nourish the magic and always carry it in your heart.
Happy holidays, however you celebrate them!
