...the place is empty except for a lone young man going through a vigorous workout. Weight training, followed by sparring with the dummy in the ring, then cardio on the elliptical, rinse and repeat, with a bit of a break in between, all the while the sounds of the Weeknd echoing thru the building. You smell the aroma of a cigar, faintly, but it's there...Cuban. Only the best for this gentleman, one who's very familiar to these airwaves...
...hope he doesn't kill himself down there.
The early morning light shines through the window and reveals our onlooker...owner of this gym, soon to be HWA Hall of Famer, living legend himself, Ronnie McNeil. He looks down at Freddie pushing himself to and through his limits, and cracks a slight smile.
I watched...the standard in HWA has changed. THe bar has been raised a bit. I look at the current roster, and while it's nothing compared to the days when I reigned, it's pretty formidable. Ol Butch gave it his best shot, but that kid James...he's a grown young man...making waves already. It doesn't surprise me in the slightest that he's got the gold. He was built for this, and it shows.
I look at my young protege, and I can honestly say he's the second best man on the roster. No bullshit. Fred can beat anyone on the roster, and make it look damn near easy....except one man.
And that man is the standard...the champ.
Sure he's come close, and had James beaten...but close aint shit in this business, and Fred knows that. That's why he's down there taking himself through a piece of hell right now, because he knows the game done changed in HWA.
The gap between him and the rest of the roster is the same as the gap between himself and James. I know Fred realizes this, but I doubt James will. It's incumbent on Fred to make him realize it. I know my young apprentice has it in him, even though I don't like this whole tradition thing he's on...he's gotta wise up. The "tradition" of HWA is all about getting it done by any means necessary. The second he realizes that....nothing in this world will stop him from being a world champion. The dynasty will continue....
...and Ronnie flashes that diamond sign with a smile on his face, as we fade downstairs to where Freddie is, in a rest break, pouring sweat, body aching, having repeated this routine over the last three hours. He sits leaned over on the bench, breathing slight, seemingly ready to go another round...
...next level, game on....
