"Matt-kun, channel your strength into each strike," Red Dragon called out, his voice carrying the weight of wisdom and encouragement.
Matt nodded, his brows furrowed with determination. He and Jeremy as well as Sean had become more than just training partners over the years they had spearheaded the HWA roster, they were like honorary brothers. But whilst they had trained together for years, this would be the first time tagging together. This upcoming tag team match held the promise of victory and the chance to settle the score with Maniac and Deas.
Between strikes, Matt glanced at Red Dragon, a curious expression etched upon his face. "Sensei, how do you remain unaffected by Maniac's taunts? He is the most insufferable prick I’ve ever met, so he is!”
Red Dragon paused, his gaze shifting to the distance for a moment, as if searching for the right words. A faint smile curved his lips, betraying a deeper understanding.
"Matt-kun, in the realm of battle, words can be used as weapons or distractions," Red Dragon began, his voice calm and measured. "Maniac's taunts are meant to divert your focus, to provoke a reaction. By letting them bother you, you give him power over your emotions."
Matt listened intently, his eyes locked on Red Dragon. He could sense a profound philosophy hidden beneath the Sensei's words. He always had a way with words. Sometimes he didn’t understand the meaning but he always felt better somehow after hearing him speak.
"By remaining centered and unaffected, you deny him that power," Red Dragon continued. "Focus on your training, your friendship with Jeremy, and on the fire within you both. Think about what has transpired in recent weeks. The attacks, the insults, from both of them. Let your actions speak louder than any insults."
Matt absorbed the wisdom, a newfound clarity washing over him. The heavy bag became a mere conduit for his determination, each strike resounding with purpose.
"I understand, Sensei," Matt said, his voice filled with resolve. Red Dragon nodded, a flicker of pride evident in his eyes. "Indeed, Matt-kun. You and Jeremy possess the strength and spirit to rise above the noise. Keep training hard, trust in your connection, and let it fuel your victory."
“Did you ever face them, Sensei? Maniac and Deas, I mean,” Matt asked.
“I didn’t, no.”
“But you would’ve liked to have?”
“There are many opponents I didn’t get the chance to face off with, Matt-Kun. Maniac’s and Deas’ paths didn’t cross with mine. But yours has, Matt-Kun and you must stay the course.”
“Yes, Sensei.”
Matt’s body language dropped slightly and he dropped his assault on the bag.
“What troubles you, Matt?”
“I keep thinking about Erica, so I do, Sensei. Do you really think we let her down?”
Red Dragon's gaze softened, his voice carrying empathy. "I understand, Matt. No, I don’t think we let her down. She made a choice. But dwelling on the past or the future can cloud your focus. Let go of any regrets or worries. Find your center in the present moment."
“It just stings, Sensei, ye know?"
Red Dragon's expression remained serene, his voice steady. "The path each individual chooses is their own, Matt-Kun. We can only control our own actions and intentions. Focus on your own growth and let go of the pain of betrayal. It will only hold you back."
Matt absorbed Red Dragon's wisdom, his breaths steadying. The echoes of their conversation seemed to mingle with the rhythmic strikes in the gym, blending into a harmony of resolve.
"Yes, Sensei," Matt responded, his voice tinged with determination. Red Dragon's eyes sparkled with pride, a hint of a smile tugging at the corners of his lips. "That's the spirit, Matt. Believe in yourself and the training you've received. Keep your focus on the task at hand."
Matt's fists continued their dance with the heavy bag, his strikes gaining renewed purpose. "Aye, Sensei. I know the Asylum Match is in August but I can’t help thinking about it."
Red Dragon's voice held a gentle caution. "Remember, Matt, to reach that match, you must conquer the challenges before you. Don't let thoughts of the future overshadow the importance of the present. Each step counts."
Matt nodded, his gaze meeting Red Dragon's with a renewed determination. "You're right, Sensei. I'll take it one step at a time. Focus on what's in front o' me."
Red Dragon's calm demeanor solidified, pride radiating from him. "Embrace the journey, trust in your abilities, and face each challenge with unwavering resolve. The Asylum Match will come, but for now, give your all to the present."
As their conversation faded into the background, Matt's strikes gained a renewed vigor, his focus sharpening. The gym seemed to pulsate with the shared determination of wrestler and Sensei, their connection fueling their pursuit of greatness as the scene faded to black.
