As he lay on his bed, on top of the covers, he couldn't help but drift into thoughts of Jeremy. During his recent match against Maniac, he had witnessed a different side of his beau —a more ruthless and aggressive demeanor. Matt understood the motivation behind this transformation. Matt knew that his challenge to Maniac for an Exploding Barbed Wire Death Match at Helloween Harvest had unsettled Jeremy, pushing him to take matters into his own hands and inflict as much damage on Maniac as possible. There was a twisted romanticism in Jeremy's willingness to risk disqualification if it meant ensuring his own personal safety. It brought a smile to his face as he thought of Jeremy. It was still all very new to him. They hadn’t even decided if they were boyfriends but given their recent…dalliances, for lack of a better word, he was pretty sure that was a foregone conclusion. As if by magic, his phone vibrated on his bedside table and he reached over, the illumination from the screen startling for a moment. As his eyes adjusted, he could see Jeremy’s name flashing across.
“Morning babe, I’m at the airport. Got spotted by the media and had the worst interview ever, I’ll tell you about it later if they don’t post it beforehand, probably edit it up to make it look like they want anyway. I miss you…we have to book our flight together next time for sure. This is one part of the job or being a “celebrity” I hate, you’d probably have told her to piss off or something. Anyway…I wish you were here. I’ll let you know when I land, maybe we can get together tonight if you’re not too tired. XOXO”
He felt his stomach flutter with excitement from the second word. Babe. He smiled. He hoped the ambush journalism Jeremy had alluded to in his message hadn’t gotten to him too much. He made a mental note to help him forget about it later. He definitely agreed they should travel together next time. Without wasting anymore time, he replied:
Morning babe, I miss you too, so I do! Try not to think about it, these journalists are always trying to find a way to twist what we say. Even if it does get published, you know Butch and Wisdom will have your back! Let me know when you land, I’m already home and I can help you unwind if you’re feeling tense ;-) xxx
He put his phone away and soon found himself reflecting on his recent performance, particularly the Asylum Match from Art of War, Matt acknowledged to himself that he had proven himself to a great extent to the wider wrestling community. He had pushed his limits and demonstrated his resilience inside the ring. However, a lingering pang of regret still gnawed at him, the feeling that perhaps he could have done more to secure victory and overcome his nemesis but his own hubris got in the way. It was a blend of frustration and determination, fueling his desire to rise above and conquer the challenges that no doubt lay ahead. He thought about the challenges of his relationship with Jeremy should it go public. Whilst it was 2023, same-sex relationships, especially with men and in heavily-masculine sports like pro wrestling were still considered taboo. The thought of Jeremy potentially being harangued by the likes of Fallen made his blood boil and he unconsciously clenched his fists so hard his knuckles turned white.
Matt then decided that lying there stewing over negative thoughts wasn’t doing him any favours and so he got up, changed into his gym gear and decided to make his way to the Academy for a workout as the scene fades to black.
