I would like to share a few of my thoughts and observations about our Kentucky State Tournament. As usual, all State Tourneys are busy and hectic but I sure wouldn't have been anywhere else.
Men's Championship A Class
Tony, I knew you could do it if you brought your best stuff and you did just that. You were solid all the way through. No real hiccups to speak of, although I'm sure you'd disagree with me, haha!
Tony did not go through untested though. John Brown, Ricky Bell and Bobby Robinson threw some competitive games at him. John Brown was very impressive in his State Tourney debut. If he sticks in here, we should see him in the thick of the battle in the years to come. Jim Culver was also very impressive in his title defense. Jim, Tony and Bobby R. were the only 3 players to pitch above their average. It was good to see John Hankins in attendance and it was also very good to see Martin Wyatt & Alan Chesser over sitting on the truck tailgate watching the action. They drove up to watch the event. We, all as horseshoe pitchers should take this type of interest and support horseshoes as spectators. It is fun to watch a tight horseshoe game!
Class B Men
Considering our previous outcomes this year, I knew Don would be a huge hurdle to get over and he was, 29-29 on the last pitch...*whew*!! It was a lot of fun! Don Phelps is a great competitor.
Class F Men
Marlin, your win was impressive! I'm guessing you may have put in a little work to bring your average up? Steady all the way through. A.B. Webb, you always seem to be in the mix lately. I think that turn shoe is coming around for you.
Womens A Championship
I enjoyed watching you all pitch! I was glad to see it was a little more competitive this year as it was more interesting as a fan but of course I wish you all were pitching better as I know you can. I know Becky struggled and Vicki struggled in the second half but hang in there, it will come back around.
Class E Women
Congrats Betty! I'm guessing by the ringers and the scores that Betty Worley throws a close shoe. Tammy Neagle says "Did you see my last game"? Hey Tammy, it's a good feeling when your game finally starts to come around and yours is. Keep working on it and I wouldn't be surprised to see you up in the 30's next year. Jan Clay, hope you had fun and glad you pitched. Keep pitchin'!!! The better you get, the more fun you'll have!
Juniors
Wish I could have watched you guys pitch. Looks like you all had a good time. Kyle Honey cutt really has made a big jump. Keep'em goin' Kyle! Tyler, Alex, another good battle. Ben, where did you stuff all 3 of those pizzas? Have fun with that trophy and let it go once and a while!
Elder Men's A Championship
Three comments.
John Irvin is tough!
Johnnie Jones put up a nice tournament!
The Baker/Irvin battle was awesome!
Thanks and stuff.
Thanks to the Bardstown Club for putting on a very memorable State Tournament. The trophies were nice. You did a great job setting up the dinner and meeting room, nice. It would be nice to have this standard every year.
No major snafus. A few scoring scrapes but those things are almost impossible to avoid. Glad everyone seemed to show good sportsmanship. Everyone came away safe and that is always good.
Mike Bowling, I hate it that you did not get to pitch. I did not know until later what you were going through. I think I saw you once but didn't get to converse. I guess I was in a run. Hang in there.
Glad to see William Wade in attendance Saturday. William kept score on court 1 during the second flight. Thanks William!
Thank you Sally & Walter Mullins for all you do.
Thanks to Kevin Roark for lending a hand when needed.
Jim "We have results!" Peavley, Jan Clay, Laurie, Buddy, Vicki B. and everyone. Thanks.
On to the Doubles!!!
