I think every religious belief first starts as an idea or a concept, this does not mean it is wrong. The Law of Gravity was first a theory before it could be established as a law.
Primarily in the Old Testament Death was referred to as "sleeping". I believe the resurrection is first spoken of in some of the later Prophets of the OT. So therefore it was In Jesus day a "newer belief" Not even all Jews believed in the Resurrection.
Does anyone have any historical or scriptural input on this topic.
