I've got to put my "6" cents in here. Dash, while in the the relatively short period the Niner's were good, what have they done since? Some have used the same argument you have concerning the Cowboys. They were fairly dominant in the 90's, but have done rather close to nothing since then. John, as for the Packers, when was their last Big Dance appearance, let alone win?
That all being said, I've read stories, editorials, polls, forums, etc. concerning this very subject. Actually, more than I can count. The most logical consensus all that I've read and such came to was that one would have to go individual sport by sport.
In baseball, the team with the most "votes" has been the New York Yankees. In soccer, the almost unamimous team has been the Manchester United. In basketball, it's been almost neck-in-neck between the Boston Celtics and the Minneapolis/Los Angeles Lakers. In sailing, it's unanimously the United States (with a streak of winning the America's Cup of over 100 years). In football, there's evidence supporting several teams. The Green Bay Packers, Dallas Cowboys, Chicago Bears and (my personal pick in this category) the Pittsburgh Steelers (a.k.a. Sixburgh Steelers).
