Actually, from 1981 to 1998, the 49ers were the most consistently dominant team in the NFL. Only once during that span did they finish any lower than 2nd in their division and not once did they lose more than 6 games in one season (and in one of those, they won the Super Bowl.) It don't think you will find any other NFL team with a comparable record over the course of 18 seasons since the Super Bowl era began. The Cowboys never had a stretch like that. The Steelers never did. Nobody ever did. During that 18 years, the 49ers won 5 Super Bowls and lost none. Only one team has won more. The Steelers achieved that last season when the won their 6th.

But you're right, since Eddie Debartolo left, the record has sucked. In reality it was doomed when the salary cap came in. And the salary cap was directly a result of what Debartolo was willing to do simply in order to win, regardless of revenue. I highly doubt the Yankees would willingly lose money to win. But they don't have to worry about it. There is no salary cap in MLB and they have by far the largest revenue stream of any club.
In short, MLB is Yankee World and the Yankees will fight to keep it that way by blocking any attempt to establish a cap.
