This economic meltdown has hurt everyone. I, like you, have lost and continue to lose money in the stock market. My 401K is stuck in there and it frustrates the snot out of me that I can't do anything but sit here and watch it dwindle away.
But this has been a long time in the making (imho) and the fixes are not going to be easy. It will require all of us to sacrifice and make tough choices we may not like. It is going to require a leader who is going to be able to lead with inspiration. There is study after study after study that shows that we cannot tax our way out of this mess. They can tax the rich until they are dirt poor and it won't come close to paying off our debt. And will completely kill employment and the stock market in the process.
Don't get me wrong. I think all of us need to be paying a fair tax. I'm in favor of a complete overhaul of our tax system. The idea of a National sales tax, doing away with all other taxes, interests me. Herman Cain is proposing a "9-9-9" tax system. Have you heard about it? If not, you should go check out his web page.
But all of this really does not address the problem in my view. The problem is not really taxation. The problem is spending. The problem is a Government that is over reaching, overdoing, and out of control. Someone in this thread (I can't remember who) mentioned or asked why we can't just let people be who they want to be and not bicker. Hey, I'm all for that. But "the left" is not willing to leave the rest of us alone. They think they are all knowing, all caring, all superior, and are willing, ready, and wanting to impose their beliefs on the rest of the world.
Everything from what kind of light bulb I can use, to how many gallons of water my toilet can use in a flush, to what I can eat, to how much I can eat, to how much lawn I can have..... and it just goes on and on and on. If you feel all of this stuff is good, go ahead and live it. But why impose your beliefs on the rest of us? The left wants everyone to think they are all accepting and tolerant of everyone. Really? It seems to me they are the ones that are demanding I live my life according to their standards. And the only way they can assure I do that is to get into power and make laws that will control every aspect of my life. And in so doing, more and more freedom erodes away. And I'm intolerant???
As to the divided nation and the anger directed to the President. I'm sorry, but it seems no one remembers the hate and anger directed at Bush and Cheney. in the days right after 9/11 we came together as a Nation in ways I didn't think possible. It didn't last long though, before politicians tried to cash in on it. I could go on a much longer rant about that, but my fingers are getting tired and this post has droned on too long already. Suffice it to say though, Bush and Cheney were called every name in the book, and still are for that matter. Again, most of the anger, hatred, and unkindness I see today is coming from the left. The manner in which Sarah Palin, as just one example, has been treated is deplorable. They have gone after her, her family in the most disgusting and vile manner imaginable. And yet we are the hate mongers??? Really?
Sorry, but that noise is just noise to me.
All that being said, Viola, Emma, anyone else who may fall into the catagory of being my political opposite. We need not battle amongst ourselves. Hopefully we can discuss things in a kind and rational manner. There are extremists on both sides of this battle that are willing to go to any extreme to win I suppose. But we don't need to get caught up in that. Do we? Some of my last posts with Ma were us battling over politics. I regret that. I hope I have grown from that and learned from that. I treasure my association with all my Mayberry friends. As in real life, we will not always agree with everyone on everything. But don't worry. I'll keep working with you until you're thinking "right".
Love you guys.
