Bill,
I can't really comment on the protection methods that you need for your climate since I don't have experience with protecting palms in zones lower than 7b/8a. I just know that sometimes people overprotect and end up burning, frying, or killing their plants from too much heat in the winter.
I think you can swing a robusta if you are willing to protect it with an enclosure and heat source. Jay does it quite well. You have enough summer heat to make it recover fully, I believe. The trash can method would work well. I would go ahead and order one because they are easy to protect when small. In 5 years, that will be a different story though!
I say give it a try. Even if it doesn't make it, you will have enjoyed a plant for one full year. I'd keep tweaking my protection techniques until you get it right because it's worth the effort! Who knows, it may be a lot easier than you think. Keep us posted.
Cheers,
Austin
