My butia capitata has done remarkable over the years here in the Little Rock metro. When I planted it, I thought the palm would only last a couple years and definitely expected winter damage each year. Only one year out of the last five have given this butia any trouble. I seem to recall the first year it had slight frond damage at 13 degrees and the second year it put out a deformed frond indicating some moisture got down into the spear and froze. Back then, I protected it with a floodlight and a tarp when freezing rain hit. I haven't had to protect the palm the last few winters. It's happy!
Yeah, it was foggy this afternoon with the warm air advection.
Is it normal to be putting out two inflorescences this time of year? I hope I can make some jelly next year!
These are my largest trachycarpus fortunei.
Waggies are so cool!
