Right on...that's exactly the way to grow tropicals! The basjoos have simply taken off since spring. I'm amazed you got that growth in just one year. Mine took two years to reach that level. I started with small tissue cultured plants in 4 inch pots though. 
Good idea to start with large bananas in your climate. You see how well its paid off! Wow!
Those Zebrinas add a nice touch of red to the tropical garden too. I decided to grow some this year again. I also see you have some edible bananas mixed in. Are those Orinocos? They store very well bareroot in the crawlspace.
You've done an excellent job this year! I'm most impressed. I bet you are proud, and you should be! A++++
