Hi there! I haven't had a chance to get back down to southern Arkansas for a butia photo shoot, but I think I'll be able to head down that way in the late fall. I will definitely let everyone see the good photos of the palm whenever I can get them. I, too, think it is an important discovery of such an old palm in zones 7b/8a.
Yes, I sure did plant some palms at a local community college. I planted six windmill palms, 6 sabal minor 'McCurtain County, OK', and two needle palms at the school. They are thriving now. In fact, a few sabal minors are seeding! Unfortuntely, the grounds crew piled mulch too close to the trunk of a windmill palm and caused it to die. I have since replaced it, however. I will get some updated photos soon.
I would like to try those bananas you've mentioned. I don't have good luck germinating banana seeds, but I'll see what I can do.
They sound pretty cold hardy. I like the 'no-dig' bananas like musa basjoo! I'll let you know when the velutina seeds are ready. It should be about a month more.
I hope all is going well in your garden.
Cheers,
Austin
