Hi Austin, Thank you for posting the Photo! Its an impressive specimen, even by Florida or Gulf Coast standards. It looks like it might be old enough to have survived the sub-zero temperatures that occurred during the 1980s in this part of the country.Of course we don't know what size it would have been at that time, or if it received any type of cold protection during its younger years etc...
It seems to have a very dense head of leaves. It also looks like it may be fruiting,or may still retain some of the old fruit stalks from last year.Someday your Butia capitata will probably be as large! I've noticed 2 Butia palms with about 3 or 4 feet of trunk growing in front of a motel,...about 25 miles south of me in Atoka county. But in the past I've been too afraid to plant any Butia palms outdoors due to concerns over Long-Term hardiness issues. However your photo gives me encouragement to experiment more with that species,and hopefully it will encourage other people in our area to experiment as well. Thanks!
