The butia is a near perfect specimen like one you would see along the Gulf Coast. I was amazed when I happened to come across it a year or so ago. I have no doubt it has survived some really chilly temperatures, probably without any protection. Who know for sure though. It had tons of fruit hanging in the tree that was just about ripe. I didn't notice any seedlings below--they probably got mowed by the homeowner. If my butia grows this large, I will be thrilled. I expected our winters to kill it but instead it has brushed off the cold temps and is thriving. If you are willing to give a butia some protection, I say plant one in the spring. I hope these pics give you an extra push to try one out in your area!
