True dat. It's smart of JS to chill and keep it on two wheels, because he sure lost a lot of motocross and supercross titles by racing like a tweaker - fast, but a roving soil sampler.
Villo beat all the 450s by over a minute at the MXdN before he got hurt, and he set fastest time a few times this year. When he moves to the 450s and starts pressuring Stewart, I would think that Stewart would have a lot in reserve, as you say. Stewart is riding smarter than he used to, and with all his experience and his newfound ability to slow down, finish every moto and win championships, he's had the chance to settle down and get used to the championship-winning pace. Since he's gotten more consistent, he knows his limits better, and he's ridden at that level all year. When he decides to push the ragged edge again, he'll have this consistent season behind him, he'll be more ready for the task of berserking the ragged edge and he'll know when and where to put his neck on the line and when and where to ride for points.
Any of those guys - Dungey, RV or Stewart - could be the dominant 450 rider in two years. It's always interesting to see which NMA riders (and others) wind up being the fast guys in the two classes. Hopefully somebody will come along to push Stewart back up to that ragged edge. Looks like the 450s will be a snoozefest until that happens.
Remember how the AMA degraded the 125 (250 four stroke) class to be less important than the 250 class? These lap times show that the 125 (250 four stroke) riders can match the speed of the premier class.
I think smaller riders should spend their time in the smaller displacement classes, to take advantage of the power-to-weight ratio. In a way, making the larger displacement class the premier class discriminates against small or short people. The class where a small rider would have an advantage is demoted to apprentice status.
Maybe they should make a rule that the fastest lap time of the day gets extra points or something. Might get Stewart to pick up the pace.
