That other platform is probably set up for an air bag, in case he overshoots the top deck. That bump might just be part of the air bag.
Looks like I guessed right about him dropping off in the opposite direction from the launcher.
Yeah, anybody topping that will have to bring every bit of sack, bag and satchel they have.
